Weightless is a global organization that helps foster the development of a new communications standard to increase the efficiency of Machine to Machine (M2M) communications in the unused and underused parts of the wireless spectrum, called “white space.”

Noting that a standard designed specifically for short to mid-range machine communications within white space is needed, the global organization announced the formation of a new Special Interest Group (SIG), a move that has received strong traction among industry players.

The formation of SIG is seen as a major step in building a new communications global standard for M2M and Internet of Things (IoT). ARM, Cable&Wireless Worldwide, CSR (News - Alert) and Neul have signed the “SIG Promoter Agreement.”

Officials at Cable&Wireless Worldwide felt that having another agreed standard would help accelerate the growth and acceptance of M2M communications, while chief technology officer at CSR observed that contributing in the SIG will help it better understand market needs.

Indicating that this was an important milestone for Weightless, William Webb, CEO, noted that the intention of the organization was to rapidly “grow membership from its current base of 50 high-technology companies and encourage interested parties to join this world-changing initiative."

With data levels soaring across the world and next wave of connectivity being delivered across applications, SIG will reportedly help establish a common set of standards that deliver the key requirements for M2M communications.

“With common standards we can all benefit from intelligence embedded and connected everywhere, so the ARM (News - Alert) team is excited about the huge potential this standard will unlock," observed Mike Muller, chief technology officer, ARM.

Responsible for delivering royalty-free open standards to enable the Internet of Things, Weightless noted that its technology has been optimized specifically to establish such a new standard and encourage its adoption.

"The IoT is the engine for economic growth in the next decade, much of which will come from new and innovative applications. Weightless will enable this new growth and Neul is excited to be part of the SIG that will make it a reality," noted James Collier, CEO of the company.

The Weightless standard this group will define is expected to be completed in early 2013 and will detail how they will back Weightless' mission to accelerate the adoption of the new standard.

InterDigital (News - Alert) Inc., a developer of wireless technologies, offers standards-based gateway and server technologies that have helped power multivendor demonstrations and interoperability testing of wireless Machine to Machine communications that are expected to significantly increase adoption and drive down costs in M2M communications.
